Clean air with Bio-Cat

The Bio-Cat biological air treatment system from Hanki Industrial Co., Ltd. offers a sustainable, nontoxic way to treat odors at municipal waste managing plant, and agri-food industries. The system uses biotrickling filter technology and a structured synthetic media that removes more than 99.5 percent of hydrogen sulfide and 95 percent of all odors without chemicals or carbon adsorbents.

The Bio-Cat’s uniform airflow, optimized mass transfer and controlled microenvironment facilitate proliferation of specific odor-removing bacteria. The filter is available in a range of sizes and configurations depend on each facility’s needs.

The system is not a bioscrubber, said CEO Kwang Jin Park. “A bioscrubber is basically a tower containing media that is irrigated with recirculated water,” he says. “Much of the biology resides in the liquid, rather than on the media. The biotrickling filter— it’s a once-through system, said CEO Kwang Jin Park, company chairman. “The bacteria adhere to the media inside the reactor, so it’s a fixed-film reactor that allows for stratification of different types of bacteria. This enables removal of inorganic and organic odors in a single reactor vessel,” said CEO Park. With an estimated lifespan of more than 30 years (thanks to using high quality material instead of conventional steel), the lowmaintenance filtering system includes a blower that moves air through the bioreactor, a control panel, and a programmable logic controller that can be viewed remotely. “It’s a low-operating-cost system,” CEO Park said. “The bacteria don’t charge you anything to do the work.” The Bio-Cat has been designed to overcome deficiencies typically experienced with organic media. The Bio-Cat’s in-organic medias reduce the footprint space required, have low maintenance and operating costs and have a guaranteed bed life of over 30 years with appropriate maintenance.

Biological odor control has emerged as the most cost effective option for controlling odors, volatile organic compounds, hydrogen sulfide and other hazardous air pollutants. One of the primary benefits of biological odor control is that it has
much lower operating and maintenance costs than carbon, chemical scrubbers or thermal oxidizers.

Biological treatment utilizes microorganisms to remove contaminants; therefore it does not require frequent, repetitive purchases and storage of chemicals. Also, because the media does not absorb the contaminants, it does not require frequent removal, disposal and replacement as is required with carbon systems. Biological treatment is as effective as thermal oxidation but without the high energy consumption costs. For plants not ready to abandon their existing technology, the filter unit can be installed in series before a chemical scrubber or carbon system to reduce operating costs. For such efficiencies and cost effectiveness, Hanki’s Bio-Cat has praised as “High Quality at a low cost in the world market” by Springer, the revered German publisher specialized in science.
