Chinese ex-mine tycoon executed for leading crime gang

A court in central China says a former mining tycoon who led a crime gang that killed rivals has been executed along with four of the gang’s members.

The Xianning Intermediate People’s Court in Hubei province said Monday that Liu Han, his brother Liu Wei and three other men were executed at an unspecified time after their death sentences were approved by the Supreme People’s Court.

Liu Han had been chairman of energy conglomerate Sichuan Hanlong Group in the southwestern province of Sichuan. The company owns stakes in Australian and U.S. mines.

The court previously said that the gang monopolized the gaming business in a city in Sichuan and tyrannized local people, while also having close ties to officials.

The penalties and executions come amid President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption crackdown. (AP)
