Gov’t to decide whether to salvage ferry this week

The government said Monday it will decide later this week whether to raise the ferry that capsized last year, claiming 304 lives.

In one of South Korea’s worst maritime disasters, the ferry Sewol sank off the southwest coast on April 16 last year. Most of the victims were high school students on a school trip.

Family members have urged the government to raise the ferry, which may contain the bodies of nine passengers that have yet to be recovered.

The central disaster control center is holding a meeting Wednesday to decide on the matter, according to the Ministry of Public Safety and Security.

Maritime Minister Yoo Ki-june said earlier in the day a technical review team has concluded the recovery of the ferry is possible. (Yonhap)
