China urges restraint after N. Korea’s submarine missile test

China called for restraint Monday after North Korea said last week it successfully test-launched a ballistic missile from a submarine.

“We hope that all relevant parties can do more to ease tensions and jointly uphold peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, told a regular press briefing, when asked about the North’s test-launch.

North Korea’s state media said on Saturday that leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the test-firing of the missile from an offshore location. If independently confirmed, it would be a significant advance in the North’s missile technology.

Under U.N. resolutions, North Korea is banned from conducting ballistic missile tests. (Yonhap)
