3 found dead in apparent group suicide

Three men were found dead after apparently committing suicide together at a bed and breakfast, a police official said Monday, the latest in a series of group suicides in South Korea in recent years.

The bodies of the men in their 20s and 30s were found by the B&B owner Sunday night, and a survivor was rushed to a nearby hospital, said Eom Jae-cheong, chief crime investigator at Wonju Police Station in Gangwon Province.

A brazier containing dying embers and a suicide note were also found in the room.

The four had driven to Wonju from different parts of the country in two cars, one of which was a rental, Eom said.

Police were investigating cell phone records to find out how the four met, and they planned to carry out an autopsy to determine the exact cause of their deaths, Eom said.

The accident is the latest in a series of group suicides that took place in South Korea in recent years.

In May, three sisters in their late 20s and early 30s were found dead in an apparent group suicide in Bucheon, just west of Seoul.

South Korea had the highest suicide rate among the member states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a group of 34 mostly rich nations, for 10 consecutive years from 2002 to 2012.

In 2012, about 28 per 100,000 South Koreans died from suicide. (Yonhap)
