The Unification Ministry said Monday it plans to hold a forum in October to discuss the unification of North and South Korea with Nobel Peace Prize laureates and experts from abroad as this year marks the 70th anniversary of inter-Korean division.
South Korea plans to hold the conference, tentatively named the “Global Peace Forum,” in Seoul in a bid to discuss how to prepare for unification with Nobel Peace Prize winners and experts on the Korean Peninsula, according to the ministry.
The forum is expected to be held in late October, but a specific date has not been decided.
“The forum is aimed at shedding light on the meaning of Korea’s unification for global peace,” a ministry official said, asking not to be named. “It would also serve as an occasion for reaffirming our will for unification.”
The participants are expected to unveil a declaration of peace that is designed to promote reconciliation and raise awareness of unification, the ministry said.
The forum is part of Seoul’s move to mark the anniversary of liberation at a time when the two Koreas still remain technically at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. (Yonhap)
