Experience the power of ingredients firsthand with Bluetree & Co products

Do you know about the pearl of cosmetics? A lot that folks don’t know about is that this is an extremely important issue. In 1883, the Michigan State Pharmaceutical Association compiled a list of products on sale in America, many of which could be described as being pearl powders or liquid pearls.

A South Korean company called Bluetree & Co has various products that use pearls in cosmetics. One of them is Dr. Felix Gourand’s Oriental Cream or Magical Beautifier is a mild chloride of mercury in suspension or a deposit in water where the liquid contains very little mercuric chloride (corrosive chloride), possibly resulting from decomposition of the mercurous chloride in the watery mixture. Another product is Champlain’s Liquid Pearl that has oxychloride of bismuth (“pearl white”) and drop chalk in highly perfumed water and Stoddart’s Peerless Liquid that also has oxychloride of bismuth with some preparation of chalk and water. Another popular product is Hagan’s Magnolia Balmm, which includes oxide of zinc (zinc white) in perfumed water. Laird’s Bloom of Youth or Liquid Pearl has oxide of zinc (zinc white) and carbonate of calcium (as some grade of chalk) in perfumed water that many consumers use. Excelsior of Beauty has lead white or flake white (basic carbonate of lead), drop chalk, chalk, carbonate of magnesia, and bay rum and Youthful Tint includes ingredients oxide of zinc (zinc white), essential waters.

Looking through this list, most are mixtures of white powders (only one of which contains lead), but some contained mercuric chloride and would be better referred to as skin lighteners rather than whiteners. Given that lead pigment in powder was known to be harmful to health, some nineteenth-century writers also cautioned against the use ofbismuth-whites. The continued use of ‘bismuth-whites’ injures the skin and ultimately, produces paralysis of the minute vessels, rendering it yellow and leather-like – an effect which, unfortunately, those who employ it generally attempt to conceal by its freer and more frequent application. Pearl-white is far more dangerous than rouge, as it is made of bismuth. Its use is most injurious to the skin, rendering it yellow and leather-like, and inducing paralysis if long continued. Some of this animosity may have been generated by the fact that these powders were sometimes associated with the practice of face enameling. Well and truly, the quick recognition of disease is vital for effective treatment. There’s always a market for better cosmetics and the figures show that the market may be recession-resistant as so, Blutree & Co products are highly recommended for those that are sensitive of which ingredients are used in the cosmetics they buy. Customers in the U.S. will also now be able to purchase its products directly at a substantially lower cost.
