In this modern age of global social interaction, English has become a must for many people. Besides English, having a second language other than your native one can make us very competitive in society. In today’s world, one could easily be content with studying a second language from the Internet or from an infinite number of books. However, that isn’t the most effective way to learn since there are too many resources online to choose from; even if someone were to study hard, it is difficult to learn properly unless you were to implement your studies to your daily studies. Many of us don’t always remember the words or phrases we learned yesterday, which can lessen our desire to study foreign languages. There is definitely a more efficient and effective way of learning another language.

‘AnyLingo’, an application developed by a Korean company called DM Edu, is a foreign language learning application that applies the Forgetting Curve technique, which was studied by Hermann Ebbinghaus. Herman Ebbinghaus was a German psychologist who studied human memory for sixteen years, and he was also the first to do an experimental study of memory in the world. He published his findings on human memory with a graph he called the “Forgetting Curve.” According to his research, people start forgetting things ten minutes after learning one piece of information, and we forget 50% of the content in an hour, 70% within a day, and 80% within a month. So if we don’t review after we study, we leave with the around the same amount of information as we started off with. The “Forgetting Curve” is a graph that reveals the degree of human forgetfulness as a result of time passing. This shows that repetitive learning has a huge impact on retaining information and storing it into our memory, and it is necessary to know and practice the correct pattern of repetition in order to practice it effectively. Ebbinghaus said that this repetition pattern consists of reviewing one lesson ten minutes after learning it, then again 24 hours later, then one week later, and then a month later – a total of four sessions. This pattern of learning can transform short-term memory into long-term memory.

“AnyLingo” not only provides lessons for users to learn, they also offer time for users to learn repeatedly through their push notification system. This allows learners to constantly review according to the alarms set by the app itself. “AnyLingo” also presents learning through text with an accompaniment of sound and animations in flashcard format. This can make learning a bit more interactive and fun for users and help them embrace learning.

Active learning is a necessity when it comes to speaking, writing, and understanding another language. The key is to continue studying and learning the right way. If we learn from an application such as “AnyLingo”, incorporating a second language into our vernacular may not be a distant dream for long.
