[US-NK Summit] US, NK bury the hatchet, open new era of detente

SINGAPORE — US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Tuesday agreed on denuclearization and providing North Korea with a security guarantee.

These and other agreements are stipulated in a US-North Korea agreement signed by the two, which Trump described as a 쐖ery comprehensive and impressive document.

Speaking at the ceremony to sign the bilateral agreement after his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Trump said that the meeting has borne results that are 쐀etter than anyone could have expected.

The document was signed by Trump and Kim at the Capella Hotel in Singapore, where the two sides gathered earlier in the day for the first-ever US-North Korea summit.

At the ceremony, Trump said they were signing a 쐖ery important document, a pretty comprehensive document.

The agreement states that Trump will provide a security guarantee for Kim, while Kim reaffirmed his commitment to denuclearization.

The agreement goes on to state that the two sides will work together to establish 쐍ew US-DPRK relations and to work together in 쐀uilding lasting and stable peace on the Korean Peninsula. DPRK stands for the official name of North Korea — the Democratic People셲 Republic of Korea.

The agreement also stated that North Korea will uphold the April 27 Panmunjeom Declaration and commit to complete denuclearization. The Panmunjeom Declaration was signed at the inter-Korean summit on the border, and calls for denuclearization of the peninsula and improved relations.

The US and North Korea also agreed to cooperate in repatriating prisoners of war, and those missing in action from the 1950-53 Korean War.

쏛 lot of goodwill went into this, a lot of work, a lot of preparation. We셱e very proud of what took place today, Trump said.

As for Kim, he said that the summit was a historic moment.

쏷he world is likely to see an important change, Kim said, adding that the meeting and the document mark 쏿 new beginning. He went on to thank Trump for making the meeting possible.

At the ceremony, Trump also said the 쐗hole relationship with North Korea and on the Korean Peninsula is going to be (a) very much different situation than has been in the past.

He added that both he and Kim 쐗ant to do something, (are) going to do something and that they have developed a 쐖ery special bond.

Posing for photographs after the ceremony, Trump said that he sees Kim as being 쐖ery talented and that the North Korean leader 쐋oves his country very much.

Just before the signing ceremony, Trump and Kim took a walk around the grounds of the resort, after which the US leader described the morning셲 summit as 쐒eally fantastic.

Speaking to reporters after the working lunch, Trump said that their meeting had gone better than expected and that 쐄antastic progress has been made.

Earlier in the day, Trump showed his characteristic confidence. Speaking in front of cameras ahead of the meeting with Kim, the US president said that the meeting would be a success and that 쐗e will have a tremendous relationship, I have no doubt.

As for Kim, the North Korean leader said that the meeting was arranged in spite of differences, adding that 쐃verything was overcome to make it to this place despite the past that holds (us) back.

In Seoul, President Moon Jae-in expressed hopes for the success of the US-North Korea summit, saying that he had a sleepless night in anticipation of the meeting.

쏷he North-US summit has started. Perhaps the minds of our people are on Singapore. I too spent a sleepless night, Moon said at Tuesday셲 Cabinet meeting.

The weekly meeting started with the president and top government officials watching live coverage of the summit in Singapore.

(I) together with the people (of South Korea) ardently hope for a successful meeting that brings us complete denuclearization and peace, and opens a new era for the South, the North and the US, Moon said.

Moon will be briefed on the meeting by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday in Seoul. Pompeo is set to arrive in Seoul on Wednesday.
